Hingakawa Peaberry, Rwanda
A rare and exquisite coffee – An elegance of a people; Abakundakawa Rushashi coffee cooperative is represented by two women’s associations, Hingakawa and Dakundakawa. Hingakawa translates to “let’s grow coffee” and Dakundakawa translates to “we love coffee.” The women of Hingakawa are both a witness and victim to some of the darkest periods in Rwandan history; the 1994 Rwandan Genocide. This group of women includes both ethnic groups that clashed – Hutu and Tutsi. The women made a decision to make poverty their mutual enemy rather than each other. With this sentiment, they have been able to move forward and heal a community and a nation through their leadership, courage, and bravery. Hingakawa, is more of a chant that it is a mere statement. It is a resolution to fight an epidemic that has crippled and claimed lives of numerous households – Poverty.
